LET'S GO FOR THE DREAM!
LET'S GO FOR THE DREAM!
I am grounded in compassion and elevated in absurdity, and am dedicated to connecting children to the power of a seriously playful yoga practice. Working in schools and playing with words, I discovered that students were far more connected to their daily lessons when they felt not only heard, but understood. Seen. Connected. Grounded.
I’ll connect you with some facts because I know you may want to get grounded in our teaching methodology.
I work on grounding into my own heart, so I can uplift and elevate all those I come into contact with. I find that by asking “Are you safe? Are you sound? Are you whole? Are you well?” I can help students of all ages and abilities find the grounding they need to truly soar.
Awilda Rivera, a native New Yorker, found yoga when she moved to Atlanta some years ago. The community, self-awareness, and physical health she gained through Yoga inspired her to identify ways to bring Yoga to the greater Atlanta community, especially children. She enjoys working with kids as a Get Grounded Teacher, who also has a traditional apprenticeship with Cheryl Crawford. As an alumna of Prep for Prep, a New York based non-profit aimed to create educational equality for academically gifted & socio-economically disadvantaged students, Awilda was immediately drawn to the broad reaching mission of Atlanta Yoga Movement. The opportunity to share Yoga with Atlanta School children, promoting their health, self-awareness & community was one she could not pass up. Awilda also believes that Yoga should be shared with School Faculty and Administrators, and has begun to work on ways to get more low cost Yoga to Teachers at their schools once a week. She currently offers a Yoga class to the Teachers at Druid Hills Middle School and is working on getting more schools involved. Her Academic Background includes a Juris Doctorate from Rutgers School of Law (’09), a Bachelor of Arts in Government from Wesleyan University (’02). She is a alumnus of the prestigious Middlesex School in Concord, Mass. and the very progressive Village Community School in Manhattan. Awilda is a Spiritual Healer, Shaman and Yoga teacher focused on bringing healing and community to all through promoting various avenues to greater self-awareness and personal empowerment.
My mother set a very good example of giving back. She typically worked with charities that benefited children since they are the future. Everyone should give back when they can. My children are older now and I have the time and passion to focus on Atlanta Yoga Movement.
I personally discovered the mental and physical benefits of yoga years ago in Cheryl's classes. I've learned that I'm a much more grounded and nicer person if I can go to at least 1 class each week. I believe yoga can do wonders with children.
Cheryl has shared her successes and heart melting experiences with me. She was the first friend I met when I moved to Atlanta in 1987. We've been through it all including many yoga experiences before she found her true calling of combining her love and knowledge of teaching children with yoga. I'd do anything to help Cheryl achieve her goals.
I'd like to raise both awareness and funds to expand yoga in schools. And maybe, just maybe, I can get my kids to enjoy yoga too.
